Terms of Service

Last updated: 2026-04-30

In short: Use it freely, don't abuse it, don't publish things that aren't yours to share, and we make no promises about uptime or fitness for purpose.

1. What these terms cover

These terms apply to your use of the Cotext browser extension and the website at cotext.io (together, the Service). By installing the extension, signing in to the site, or publishing a profile, you accept these terms.

2. Open source license

The Cotext source code is published under an open-source license available in the project repository. You can read, modify, and self-host it under that license. These terms cover your use of the hosted Service we operate at cotext.io — the code license governs the code itself.

3. Your account

You're responsible for keeping your sign-in email and API tokens private. Don't share tokens, don't generate tokens for someone else's benefit, and revoke them immediately if you suspect they've leaked.

One person, one account. We may suspend accounts created in bad faith (impersonation, mass abuse, automated signup farms).

4. Your content

You keep ownership of any profile you publish. By publishing, you grant us a non-exclusive license to host, display, and serve that profile to anyone with the URL — that's the whole point of publishing it. Anonymous publishes are content-addressed and immutable; named pushes can be updated or removed by you at any time.

You represent that you have the right to publish what you publish. Don't use it to share content you don't own or have permission to share.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to use the Service to:

  • Attack, probe, or disrupt our infrastructure.
  • Publish content that is illegal, defamatory, harassing, or infringes someone else's rights.
  • Impersonate another person or claim a username you have no reasonable claim to.
  • Run automated bulk publishing, account creation, or scraping beyond what the rate limits allow.
  • Reverse-engineer, extract, or attempt to derive credentials or other users' data.

We may remove content or suspend accounts for any of the above, with or without notice depending on severity.

6. Service changes

We may add, change, or remove features at any time. We'll give reasonable notice of material breaking changes when we can. The extension being open source means you can always self-host the prior version.

7. Termination

You can stop using the Service at any time. We can terminate or suspend access for material breach of these terms, illegal activity, or if continuing to provide the Service becomes impractical. On termination we'll honor reasonable data export requests.

8. No warranty

The Service is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. Synthesis runs on a small AI model on your machine; the prompts it produces may be wrong, low-quality, or unsuitable for your situation. Don't treat them as authoritative.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of data or profits, arising from your use of the Service. Our aggregate liability for any direct damages is capped at the amount you have paid us for the Service in the past 12 months — which, since the Service is free, is zero.

10. Indemnity

If a claim is brought against us because of content you published or actions you took on the Service, you'll defend and indemnify us against that claim.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the operator's jurisdiction, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Disputes will be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms over time. The date at the top will change when we do. Material changes will be announced on the homepage; continued use of the Service after a change means you accept the new terms.
